Watch & Learn
Our convocation will gather at Saint Anne’s on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 5 pm for a special viewing of the new film, The Philadelphia Eleven, which tells the story of the first women to be ordained priests in the Episcopal Church. We will have popcorn and other light snacks.
There is no fee to attend, but we will be collecting donations for the Eloise Lester Scholarship Fund, which supports female seminarians. Eloise was the first woman ordained a priest in the Diocese of Atlanta. She served at Saint Anne’s in the late 70's and early 80's.
Film Summary:
In an act of civil disobedience, a group of women and their supporters organized their ordination to become Episcopal priests in 1974. The Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia welcomed them, but change is no small task. The women were harassed, some lost friends, and others were banned from stepping on church property. In this feature-length documentary film, we meet the women who succeeded in building a movement that transforms an age-old institution, and challenges the very essence of patriarchy within Christendom.
